For over a decade, Gene has served over 100 institutions across the United States in helping to answer questions about IT and Library organzations that required outside expertise.  

Gene is currently the Chief Information Officer at Ursinus College, where he serves a merging library/IT organization (see Library & IT on the Ursinus web site) and has responsibility for all aspects of information technology, library, and media services. He also serves as an independent consultant to the higher education information technology and library communities, focusing on areas of organizational effectiveness, organizational design, leadership development, work redesign, quality customer service, collaboration between IT and library organizations, and synergies between people, information and technology.

In the past, Gene held the position of Associate Vice President for Information Services and Resources at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Gene also served as the Interim Director of Information Technology Services as Albright College for two years.

Gene has been a member of the EDUCAUSE Management Institute Faculty (2004-2007), serving for the last two years as its Director. He served on the EDUCAUSE Professional Development Committee and the EDUCAUSE 2000 program committee (Nashville). He also served on the InCommon Federation Steering Committee (and has served as vice chair and chair). Gene has been active in the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (having served on the board of directors and as its chair) and in the Oberlin Group of Library Directors. Gene is a Frye Fellow from the class of 2001 and served on the Frye Institute faculty in 2006 and 2007. Gene currently serves as a member of the faculty of the CAUDIT Leadership Institute each August in Australia
